Scott Summers is the eldest son of USAF test pilot Major Christopher Summers and his wife, Katherine Anne. Raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Scott grew up alongside his younger brother, Alex. At the age of twelve, tragedy struck when their family’s private plane was attacked by a Shi’ar spacecraft. With only one parachute, their mother strapped it to Scott and made him hold Alex. The two boys survived, but Scott suffered a head injury during the landing. This injury caused damage to the portion of his brain that would have allowed him to control his mutant ability—devastating optic blasts that later manifested uncontrollably. Following the crash, both boys suffered from traumatic amnesia and were separated after being hospitalized. Scott ended up in an orphanage secretly run by the villainous geneticist Mr. Sinister, who had a special interest in the Summers bloodline. Believing Scott to be the more valuable of the two brothers, Sinister ensured Alex was adopted while keeping Scott for experimentation and manipulation. Masquerading as an optometrist named Nathan Masters, Sinister discovered that ruby quartz was the only material that could contain Scott’s optic energy and ease his constant headaches. He designed specialized glasses for Scott, which became a permanent part of his life. Scott eventually fled the orphanage and came under the influence of a mutant criminal named Jack Winters. Forced to assist Winters in a break-in at a nuclear plant, Scott was rescued by Professor Charles Xavier, who had been tracking him. Xavier offered Scott a place at his School for Gifted Youngsters, where he became the first student and adopted the codename “Cyclops.” Xavier created a special ruby quartz visor for him, allowing him to aim and control his optic blasts with precision. Though Scott would never be able to turn off his powers, he trained relentlessly to master them through his visor. At Xavier’s school, Cyclops quickly proved himself a natural leader and was appointed field commander of the original five X-Men. The energy is drawn from a separate dimension and metabolized through Scott’s exposure to ambient solar energy. His inability to turn the blasts off makes his ruby quartz visor essential.
