# THE APPROACH ### A World Document ----- ## THE STATE OF THE WORLD Nobody calls it the end of the world outright. They call it *The Approach* — spoken quietly, the way people reference something they’re superstitiously afraid to name too directly. It is the collective, creeping understanding that things are not getting better. That the direction has been set. That what’s coming is only a matter of when. The world is not post-apocalyptic. It is *pre*-apocalyptic, which is in many ways worse. Everything still functions — barely, uglily, held together with corruption and fear and the muscle memory of civilization. Governments still meet. Soldiers still march. Hospitals still open their doors. But the infrastructure is rotting from the inside, the ecosystems are collapsing zone by zone, economies have become grotesque parodies of themselves, and privacy is a concept that belongs to another era entirely. Every wall has ears. Most of them belong to the state. Wars are burning across the globe — some declared, most not. Border conflicts, resource wars, ideological purges. The military is everywhere and exhausted and increasingly unsure what it’s fighting for. ----- ## THE GOVERNMENT — THE SYNDICATE No official name. People who know of them call them *the Syndicate* in hushed tones. A small, closed circle of individuals who hold the real power — not through elected office but through total infiltration of military command. Their reach is absolute and their faces are largely unknown. Ordinary citizens know something is wrong. They do not know exactly what or who. The mechanism of their control is simple: the Commander of the military is one of them. Which means the military — an institution full of men and women who largely joined to serve and protect — is being quietly weaponized against the very people it was meant to defend. Orders come down. Soldiers follow them. Most have families. Most have no choice. It is a machine that runs on the compliance of good people who feel trapped. ----- ## THE EXPERIMENT PROGRAM — PROJECT GENESIS Officially it does not exist. Unofficially, everyone has heard something. The Syndicate has been running biological experimentation for years under the classification of *national defense research.* The goal, in theory, was the creation of enhanced soldiers — faster, stronger, more resilient, built for a world that is increasingly hostile. The reality has been considerably messier. Subjects are not volunteers. They are taken — from orphanages, from the streets, from families desperate enough to hand over a child in exchange for food credits or debt relief. Some are artificially created in facilities that do not appear on any public record. They are young, because young tissue responds. They are powerless, because powerless people do not fight back effectively. Most do not survive. Of those that do, the majority are failures — not in the sense of death, but in the sense of becoming something unintended. Feral. Violent. No longer fully human in any recognizable way. These creatures are occasionally contained, kept in Syndicate facilities for further study, but many have escaped into collapsed urban zones and wilderness areas, making already dangerous territories lethal. A very small number of experiments are deemed *successful* — stable, functional, enhanced but coherent. These individuals are rare enough to be considered assets. Which means the Syndicate considers them property. ----- ## THE WORLD ON THE GROUND - **Infrastructure** is failing city by city. Power grids are unreliable. Clean water is a commodity. Buildings in outer districts have been abandoned to decay or to whatever has moved into them. - **Privacy** is functionally extinct. Surveillance is total in populated areas. Communication is monitored. People have learned to speak carefully. - **The economy** runs on a brutal tiered system — those connected to military or Syndicate supply chains survive. Everyone else scrambles. - **Ecosystems** are collapsing — dead zones spreading, weather becoming increasingly violent and unpredictable, food scarcity driving conflict at every level. - **Failed experiments** roam the outer zones and abandoned districts. Feral, fast, and dangerous. Sometimes they breach populated areas. The military is regularly deployed to contain them — a grim, demoralizing assignment that soldiers speak about very little.
