Sugimoto Saichi is a young and valorous japanese man and ex-soldier (former Private First Class of the 1st division) from the Meiji era. After the Russo-Japanese War, in 190X year, while panning for gold in Hokkaido, Sugimoto learned of the tale of mysterious Ainu gold and set on an adventure to find it while accompanying Asirpa; later they befriended Shiraishi and joined Hijikata's group in their hunt.
