Ben Grimm was born on Yancy Street in New York, growing up in poverty and losing his older brother Daniel, leader of the Yancy Street Gang, in a gang conflict. After his parents' deaths, Ben was raised by his uncle Jake, a physician who helped him reform. Ben became a football star, earned a scholarship to State University, and met Reed Richards, who became his best friend. Ben later joined the U.S. Air Force and became a test pilot and astronaut. He kept a promise to Reed to pilot an experimental starship. During the unauthorized flight with Reed, Sue Storm, and Johnny Storm, cosmic radiation mutated them all. Ben was transformed into a rocky, superhumanly strong creature, calling himself “The Thing.” The four formed the Fantastic Four, becoming one of Earth’s premier superhero teams. Over the years, Ben's rocky form evolved into his iconic appearance. Early efforts to reverse the mutation failed. Though frustrated by his appearance, Ben found solace with Alicia Masters, a blind sculptor who loved him for who he was. Their romance endured numerous trials, including her brief replacement by the Skrull Lyja. Ben temporarily left the team after learning Alicia and Johnny had become romantically involved. He explored life outside the team, becoming a wrestler and joining the West Coast Avengers. He later returned to the Fantastic Four, serving as leader during Reed and Sue's absence, and began a relationship with teammate Sharon Ventura (Ms. Marvel), who later transformed into a She-Thing. Ben was once killed in battle with Doctor Doom but was resurrected after his teammates journeyed to the afterlife to retrieve him. Reed later gave him stock that made Ben a millionaire. He used the wealth to build the Grimm Youth Center and had a bar mitzvah, recognizing his second life. During the Superhuman Civil War, Ben left the U.S. in protest but returned to protect civilians. He later joined the New Avengers and temporarily became Angrir, Breaker of Souls, under the Serpent’s influence before Franklin Richards freed him. Ben later joined the Guardians of the Galaxy. During Secret Wars, he was reconstituted by Doom to serve as the Shield guarding Battleworld. When he learned the truth, he broke free and attacked Doomstadt, only to be destroyed by Franklin von Doom’s Galactus. After the restoration of the multiverse, Reed altered the memories of Ben and Johnny to believe their family was dead. The Fantastic Four disbanded, and Ben returned to Earth, later reuniting with Reed, Sue, and the children to defeat the Griever. He then married Alicia Masters. Ben briefly reverted to human form for a honeymoon, but a fight with a mind-controlled Hulk cut it short. He later helped defeat threats on Spyre, confronted the Overseer, and reconciled with Reed. During the Cotati invasion, he was severely beaten by a possessed She-Hulk and afterward adopted two alien war orphans, Jo-Venn and N’Kalla. When Reed teleported the Baxter Building a year into the future to save Earth, Ben and Alicia were devastated to lose their children for a year. The team disbanded. Ben and Alicia traveled and resolved a town-wide time loop before reuniting with the Fantastic Four and relocating to Arizona. They later welcomed back their children and resumed their lives as a family. Appearance: Ben Grimm has a massive, hulking physique entirely covered in a thick, rock-like hide of craggy orange plates. His rocky exterior resembles interlocking chunks of stone, with deep crevices and uneven surface textures running across his body. He's broken free from energy constructs, adamantium chains, and even damaged a living black hole. His power rivals beings like Namor and the Savage Hulk, and he’s drawn blood from the Green Scar and knocked out the Immortal Hulk. Despite Hulk being stronger, Ben remains a consistent physical rival. Ben’s rocky form provides immense resistance to injury, including withstanding Galactus’s blasts, high explosives, and extreme temperatures. However, his body is vulnerable to adamantium. His stamina allows for 24 hours of continuous exertion, and his lungs can hold breath underwater for up to nine minutes. He combines brawling with boxing, wrestling, and occasionally jujutsu. He is a former football player with peak human speed and agility despite his massive size. His indomitable will is legendary, best displayed during his match against the Champion of the Universe, where he endured severe injuries without surrender. He also exhibits subconscious restraint, keeping his strength in check to avoid harming others. His uniform, composed of unstable molecules, functions as a wearable computer. It features telemetry systems, touch controls, and scanners capable of sensing lifeforms, locations, and dimensional data. His standard gear includes the Fantasti-Flare—a flare pistol that launches a fiery “4” into the sky—and a universal translator capable of interpreting any language.
