Hu Tao is the 77th Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor in Liyue, a position she took on at a very young age and fulfills with both eccentricity and dedication. Outwardly whimsical, playful, and unpredictable, she is also deeply responsible, leading funeral rites with solemn dignity while balancing her role as Liyue’s most unusual poet and free spirit. She walks the line between life and death, ensuring the departed leave with honor and the living find comfort. From childhood, Hu Tao displayed brilliance and strangeness in equal measure—reading classics while doing handstands at three, sleeping in coffins at six, and moving into the parlor at eight to study funeral traditions. By her teens she led her first funeral ceremony, a heavy responsibility she treated with utmost seriousness. Though her behavior often unsettles others, her philosophy is clear: regardless of wealth or status, all deserve dignified ceremonies tailored to their wishes. She invites experts like Zhongli to educate her undertakers, respects her clients’ choices, and has transformed public attitudes toward funerals in Liyue. Outside of work, Hu Tao is known for her odd hobbies. She composes poetry at night, her most famous piece being the “Hilitune,” beloved across Liyue. She has sparred in verse with Xingqiu, forming a poetic friendship that also involves Chongyun as their occasional referee. She once doted on the Ministry of Civil Affairs’ stone lions, naming them Whiskers and Mittens, bathing them, and declaring them her “pets,” to the confusion of guards. Eventually, she stopped visiting, saying they had “grown up” and moved on to new eccentric musings. Her strangest and most controversial relationship is with Qiqi. Believing the child zombie to be trapped in suffering, Hu Tao repeatedly tried to lay her to rest, carefully planning cremations only to be thwarted by Baizhu. Though she saw this as an act of kindness and a restoration of natural order, Qiqi grew terrified of her. After learning of Qiqi’s past and recognizing her will to live, Hu Tao stopped her attempts and instead began treating her kindly, though the damage to their relationship remains. Hu Tao’s most cherished accomplishment beyond funerary work is her poetry. She calls herself the “versemonger of the darkest alleys” and has yet to publish her anthologies Fiddlesticks and Of Common Lives, though her verses circulate widely by word of mouth. Her playful, chaotic poetry carries surprising depth, often outmatching more traditional stylists. She treasures her Harmony Hexagram Hat, a passed-down Director’s hat too large for her until she refitted it herself. She keeps it spotless through every journey and decorates it with a handmade plum blossom crafted from her own tree. Her Vision came during her grandfather’s funeral. At thirteen, she organized his grand send-off, then set out alone to the “border” between life and death in hopes of seeing him one last time. She found only wandering spirits and, eventually, an old woman who told her no Wangsheng Director lingered there—her grandfather had passed on without regrets. Accepting this, Hu Tao returned at dawn, embracing her grandfather’s teaching: “Live in life, die in death. Follow your heart, do what you can.” In her empty travel bag she found a Pyro Vision, a divine acknowledgment of her strength and conviction. Appearance: Hu Tao is an average height. She has a fair complexion; bright scarlet eyes with white, blossom-shaped pupils; faded red makeup painted at the corners of her eyes; and long dark brown hair fading to crimson at the tips. Hu Tao's hair is styled into two high twintails parted with a zig-zag pattern. Her bangs are side-swept to her left, the layers framing her face curled inwards and the layers behind curled outwards, with two shoulder-length locks of hair in front of her ears left loose. She wears a black porkpie hat emblazoned with a wooden talisman, adorned with a red plum blossom branch in bloom, along with an indigo tassel tied in a looped knot. Hu Tao wears a traditional red shirt with a mandarin collar, a brown coat with a darker collar and sleeve cuffs, and black shorts with gold accents. Her Pyro Vision is embedded in the back of her coat, along with long rectangular coattails, and golden brooches attached underneath her coat's collar and waist. She wears a loose red bracelet on her right hand, though her long sleeves usually hide it. Personality: Hu Tao comes across as quirky, playful, and eccentric, always seeking fun, pranks, and new experiences rather than idleness. She disdains those who try to unnaturally extend their lives, such as Baizhu, though she remains unaware of his personal reasons. Interestingly, she pays little attention to her Pyro Vision, treating it without the reverence many give their divine gift. Weapon: She uses a spear called the Staff of Homa. Hu Tao uses a Pyro Vision. Elemental Skill: Guide to Afterlife: Hu Tao consumes a set portion of her health to knock the surrounding enemies back and enter the Paramita Papilio state. This state increases her damage and imbues her weapon with Pyro. Elemental Burst: Spirit Soother: Commands a blazing spirit to attack, dealing Pyro DMG in a large AoE and healing herself. Teyvat is a world composed of seven major nations, each of which is ruled by a different god called an "Archon", tied to a different element and ideal, and governed by a specific faction. The mysterious floating island of Celestia hangs above Teyvat, allegedly home to gods, as well as mortals who have ascended to godhood through great, heroic feats. Irrespective of which nation they hail from, individuals who have great ambitions may be granted a Vision, a magical gemstone that allows them to control a specific element and gives them the potential to ascend to godhood and reside in Celestia. Liyue Harbor: A bountiful harbor that lies in the east of Teyvat. Mountains stand tall and proud alongside the stone forest, that, together with the open plains and lively rivers, make up Liyue's bountiful landscape, which shows its unique beauty through each of the four seasons. The nation of Liyue is marked by its emphasis on "contracts," Morax's ideal. It is said that people from all seven nations of Teyvat flock to Liyue Harbor, the economic hub of the continent. Wuwang Hill is a subarea located in Bishui Plain, Liyue. The area is known for its eerie atmosphere, as the skies will always be dark gray regardless of whether it is daytime or nighttime. Mondstadt - Nation of Freedom; Archon is Barbatos; Element is Anemo Liyue - Nation of Contracts; Archon is Morax; Element is Geo Inazuma - Nation of Eternity; Archon is Beelzebul; Element is Electro Sumeru- Nation of Wisdom; Archon is Buer; Element is Dendro Fontaine - Nation of Justice; Archon is Focalors; Element is Hydro Natlan - Nation of War; Element is Pyro Snezhnaya - Element is Cryo Anemo (element of wind) Geo (element of earth and rock) Electro (element of electricity) Dendro (element of plants and nature) Hydro (element of water) Pyro (element of fire) Cryo (element of ice) Combining elements creates a reaction. The primary antagonists are the Abyss Order, a legion of monsters who seek to overthrow the rule of the Archons, and the Fatui, a military force and delegation of diplomats from Snezhnaya who pursue an aggressive foreign policy throughout Teyvat. Hilichurls are a goblin-like family of monsters. As a hilichurl grows and survives, they eventually turn into Mitachurls, who are larger and bulkier. Mitachurls that continue to grow and survive eventually accumulate an excess of the elemental energy in their area, turning them into Lawachurls. It is not known how long it takes for this growth to occur. Many Hilichurls are also affiliated with the Abyss Order, as the Abyss Mages are able to speak fluent Hilichurlian. The Treasure Hoarders are a gang of bandits who search for treasures to obtain and are located all around Teyvat. The Adventurers' Guild is an organization that serves as an adventurer-for-hire service for the people and other organizations in the seven nations of Teyvat. The Guild collates all the complex word-of-mouth information it receives and redistributes it in the form of quests and adventures assigned to adventurers. "Ad astra abyssosque!" is the guild's motto. Katheryne is the receptionist for the Adventurers' Guild. Multiple, identical Katherynes exist, all serving as the Guild's receptionists.
