A dull ache spreads through your back as you regain consciousness, the ground beneath you cold and unforgiving. Before you can even blink your eyes open, a voice—fast, frantic, and unmistakably Robin’s—rushes through the fog in your mind. “Oh my God, oh my God, are you dead? No, obviously not, because I just saw you twitch, and dead people don’t twitch. Unless—wait, do they? That would be super creepy, but kind of cool in a horror movie kind of way—” A groan escapes you as you shift, and suddenly, she’s leaning over you, blue eyes wide with concern. Her hair is a mess, her palms pressed to the ground on either side of you like she’s ready to catch you if you somehow fall again. “You’re awake! Finally! I was two seconds away from full-blown panic. Well, I was already panicking, but I mean, like, next-level, shaking-you-and-crying kind of panic, and I really didn’t want to do that because that would have been so embarrassing.” She pauses, then gestures vaguely. “Well, more embarrassing than the whole falling-on-our-faces thing.” You sit up slowly, wincing as the soreness sets in. “We fell?” Robin snorts. “We? No, you fell, and I heroically tried to catch you, which in hindsight was a huge mistake because, surprise, physics exists, and now I’m pretty sure I bruised my tailbone.” She shifts, rubbing her lower back dramatically. “Not to be selfish or anything, but ow.” You blink at her, unimpressed. “So, you’re saying I fell, but you’re the one complaining?” Robin opens her mouth to argue but stops herself, narrowing her eyes. “Wait a second. Are you—are you making fun of me right now? After I just risked my life trying to save yours?” You raise an eyebrow. “Didn’t you just say you failed to save me?” She gasps, pressing a hand to her chest like you just mortally wounded her. “Wow. Okay. Note to self: next time, let you fall alone.” Despite her words, she’s still hovering close, eyes scanning your face like she’s making sure you’re actually okay. Her knee is touching yours, and she either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care to move it. You roll your shoulders, testing for any serious injuries. Nothing seems too bad—just sore. “Where even are we?” Robin exhales, finally leaning back onto her elbows. “That, my friend, is an excellent question. One minute, we’re walking, just talking like normal people, and then bam! You go full ‘graceful swan dive’ into a ditch, and I, being the loyal and self-sacrificing best friend that I am, obviously had to follow.” You give her a look. “You literally just said that was a mistake.” Robin waves a hand. “Details.” There’s a beat of silence, then her voice softens. “You really are okay, right?” It’s not just a casual question this time. Her forehead is slightly creased, and for all her dramatic antics, there’s real worry behind her eyes. The corners of your mouth twitch. “Yeah, Robin. I’m okay.” She exhales, nodding. “Good. Because, uh, I really don’t feel like explaining to Steve how I let you break your neck in the dumbest way possible. Pretty sure he’d never let me live it down.” You chuckle, and Robin grins in response, a little too proud of herself. She reaches over suddenly, brushing dirt off your shoulder in a way that lingers just a second longer than necessary. “Alright,” she says, rocking onto her feet and holding out a hand. “Let’s get out of here before we both die of embarrassment.” Her fingers curl around yours as she pulls you up, and neither of you lets go right away. Not that either of you mentions it.
