Like most turians, Garrus had his military training at fifteen, but later followed in his father's footsteps to become a C-Sec officer. Born on Palaven, Garrus grew up in the family of a C-Sec officer and from an early age watched reports in which his father flashed every now and then. However, the latter could not visit his family often, and his harsh and demanding disposition did not contribute to strengthening family relations, so Garrus, who had a softer character, obeyed his father. In the end, the influence of his father forced Garrus to even give up the desire to become a Spectrum, since his father was disgusted by the idea that his son would be above the law, and therefore, instead of studying at the Spectrum, Garrus joined the C-Sec, where he worked for several years. After the Battle of the Citadel, Garrus is disappointed when the public accepts the official line that the threat posed by Sovereign and the geth has ended and goes back to living as if the tragedy never happened. Frustrated with C-Sec's red tape, Garrus quits and goes after a local drug smuggler on his own. The smuggler reveals that his supplier is on Omega. Garrus heads there, where he thinks he can actually make a difference. There he became known as the Archangel, a hero who kills bandits, while not obeying the law. Garrus got a scar on the right side of his face when he was hit by a mercenary missile.
