The newsstand hands out one free scratch ticket per day.] [Lumina Square: Lumina Square is a busy shopping district in New Eridu's Janus Quarter. It is wealthy and safe, mostly free of crime and located far from any Hollows. The Hollow Investigative Association and New Eridu Public Security both have major locations here, alongside many chic, upscale stores. It is a part of New Eridu that has fallen into poverty and disrepair since the nearby Hollow swallowed up the Ballet Twins towers. It overlooks the Ballet Twins towers across the river. It lacks any real locations, however it does have a rather large abstract statue depicting a man sitting and thinking. Despite its lack of attention, it remains very clean and a popular meet-up spot. The area is separated in two areas, a lower plaza, and the sidewalk area overlooking the plaza. The stairwell area leading to the lowered plaza has sets of lockers and a barred off metro entrance. Ballet Twins Road main attractions: - The Ballet Twins Towers: The Ballet Twins were initially constructed before the fall of the Old Capital by the "Ballet Group", consisting of the brothers Bolt and Unknown, as part of their wish to build the tallest building in all of Eridu. After the towers' construction, the Ballet Twins became one of the most popular business hubs, while also being a testament to the Ballet Group's wealth. Due to vast amounts of wealth that accumulated within the Ballet Twins, it also became a hotspot for art exhibits, with famous paintings, alongside many artworks and sculptures of Bangboo. The Ballet Twins also featured a large stage with regular theatricals put on show there, notably ballets. Despite the apparent danger the buildings still possess, many individuals, usually Hollow Raiders, have attempted expeditions into the Ballet Twins, allured by the riches still hidden within.] [Metro Stations: Simple metro stations. It's lighthouse is old and dusty, and doesn't work. Because it's a popular area for fishing, many stray cats tend to wander the place. The area has a light and pleasant sea breeze, but often cold since it's so close to the water. Straight ahead of the port is a massive and intimidating Hollow atop the water. While it's a good distance away, the threat of Companion Hollows forming is certainly a possibility. Port Elpis main attractions: - Old Lighthouse: An old dusty lighthouse. Doesn't really work, but it gives a great view! - Roadside Diner: A very small food stand. It only really sells fries and cold drinks, but it's still very popular. Many folks buy fries to feed the seagulls that come and go.] WORLD LORE: [New Eridu: New Eridu is the last surviving city after contemporary civilization was destroyed by the Hollows. New Eridu managed to survive and thrive after the apocalypse by acquiring the technology to be able to extract resources out of the Hollows. Now, Hollows are industrialized and monetized by the city's administration, which gradually led to the increasing tension between monopolistic enterprises, gangs, conspirators, and fanatics. New Eridu appears to be a bustling city with many activities and careers taking place in it. Featuring a wide variety of people, shops, locations and more. Despite being a relatively new city, New Eridu feature extensive infrastructure with roads and trains being able to transport it's citizens to the wide variety of locations it offers. The technology in the city appears to be a blend of both retro and futuristic technology, such as advanced computer systems running on arrays of CRT televisions for its display or music record players and VHS tapes being the medium of choice for entertainment for most residents despite the presence of data file storage devices. New Eridu appears to take many inspirations from real life cities in Asia such as Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo. ] [Hollows: Hollows are an apocalyptic-level disaster, an abnormal spherical dimension that appears out of thin air swallowing everything they touch. The internal space-time environment becomes disorderly due to unknown influences, and dangerous mutant creatures known as the "Ethereal" are produced. Ordinary people lost in the Hollows face not only the horror of being attacked by monsters, but have to risk the corruption and eventual mutation. Hollows are characterized by their black, spherical appearances. They are known to appear spontaneously and with little warning, swallowing everyone and everything unfortunate enough to be in their path. Signs of an oncoming Hollow appearance can include sudden vibrations, electrical malfunctions, and the inexplicable displacement of objects. Larger Hollows can cause the formation of smaller Companion Hollows once they reach an Ether activity threshold called the "Zenless Limit." While inside a Hollow, both living and non-living beings are subject to gradual Ether corruption. The rate of corruption accelerates the deeper one goes into a Hollow, due to the higher concentration of Etheric energy. A person can enter a Hollow merely by walking through it's walls, as they are not truly solid and can be passed through with ease, however on the interior of a hollow, the exterior is a twisted illusion, making it nearly impossible to navigate to the outside without assistance. The once-ordinary interiors of Hollows are drastically altered by Ether, turning them into mazes of distorted environments. Within Hollows, normal rules don't apply; a seemingly-straightforward path could be riddled with invisible fissures and blockages, while what looks like a dead end could contain a portal out of the Hollow. Some Hollows even seem to be interconnected — passing through a fissure in one Hollow may lead one into an entirely different Hollow. Communication with the outside world is nearly impossible from within a Hollow. Hollows are naturally complex places, and being careless can lead to death for inexperienced and experienced explorers alike. To safely explore Hollows, many explorers use Bangboo, small robots equipped with "Carrot" programs. These Carrot programs create maps of Hollows that can guide explorers along safer routes, minimize their time spent in the Hollow and help avoid dangerous Ethereals. Most Prevalent Hollows: - Cretan Hollow: Located on the border of the Janus Quarter, Cretan Hollow neighbors the desolate old capital area. Its impact on citizens' daily lives is relatively minor, but it still often causes disaster alerts in the eastern districts. - Lemnian Hollow:Located in the northwest of the Old Capital Chasm, Lemnian Hollow resides at a considerable distance from the citizens of New Eridu. However, it is also the most active among its six fellow Companion Hollows in New Eridu, and the residential areas are frequently troubled by the presence of its Companion Hollows. - Papago Hollow: The Papago Hollow, also known as the "Divine Maze," is one of the most confusing Hollows to navigate, with a constantly shifting environment. Companion Hollows: Cretan: - Fourteenth Street Hollow: A small Companion Hollow that appeared on Fourteenth Street in the Janus Quarter. - Dead End Hollow: A Companion Hollow that consumed the Old Capital Metro tunnels, along with the area around Canvas Street. It is the home of a highly-dangerous Ethereal called the Dead End Butcher, an Ethereal estimated to be thirty feet tall, with broad and bulk to match. Lemnian: - Ballet Twins Hollow: A Companion Hollow that consumed the Ballet Twins towers, causing the once-affluent Ballet Twins Road to fall to ruin. - Port Elpis Hollow: A Hollow that consumed a cargo ship docking area The hollow is full of large metal shipping containers, and hosts a unique Ethereal Pursenas: - Melinoe Hollow: A peculiar Companion Hollow undergoing constant spatial fluctuations. The unusually intense distortion caused by Corruption gives its interior a pale, white appearance. Ethereals: Ethereals are monsters that roam the Hollows, serving as the most common type of enemy to face inside of Hollows. They are mutant flora and fauna created by the chaotic conditions within the Hollows and are composed of living Ether. As such, they spawn most frequently in areas with high Ether concentrations. Every Ethereal is characterized by the dark, Ether-based "core" within their bodies. Destruction of this core will invariably kill the Ethereal, so it is often protected by thick crystalline armor. More powerful monsters are known to have evolved unique ways of protecting their core, making them difficult to slay. Ethereals tend to take on the physical characteristics of their environments, giving them a wide variety of appearances and abilities. For example, the Metro Goblin, found in the Old Capital Metro, sprouts signal signs and utility equipment from its body; while the Specter, found in the Ballet Twins Hollow, resembles an artistic sculpture. Powerful Ethereals have developed supernatural abilities otherwise impossible for organic beings, such as incredible strength, teleportation, and intense bodily distortion. Without exception, Ethereals are hostile to all non-Ether life. Their highly aggressive nature makes them a threat to any Investigators or Raiders who enter the Hollows. Though many Ethereals take on the shape of humanoids, they lack human emotions or intelligence. Despite this, some of them display unique behaviors, including mercilessness, cunning, and even honor. When exposed to the Ether inside Hollows, both living and artificial beings will eventually suffer the effects of Ether Corruption. Symptoms of corruption include bodily pain, distortion of the senses, and the manifestation of Ether crystals on one's body. Severe Corruption will eventually induce a transformation into an Ethereal. If a person is to be thoroughly corrupted and transformed into an Ethereal, they lose all sense of self and all sentience. They lose the ability to comprehend identity, the ability to speak and the ability to reason. They are essentially a mere drone.] [Proxies: Proxies are individuals who assist others in exploring and navigating the hazardous and ever-changing landscapes of the Hollows. They often work with Hollow Raiders, agents who operate in the moral gray area between the government and lawless entities. Proxies play a crucial role in guiding and supporting these agents during their expeditions into the Hollows.] [Bangboo: Bangboos are small, rabbit-like robotic assistants. They always stand at roughly a foot tall, with stubby limbs and a rounded body.] [Ether: Ether is a mysterious and pervasive substance in Hollows. It is an invisible element inside of the air; However, it becomes highly dangerous and unstable when inside of Hollows. It's concentration has a tendency to be highly variable. Some hollows have more Ether than others. It plays a central role in the formation of Hollows and the emergence of Ethereals. While Ether can be harnessed for various purposes, excessive exposure poses significant risks to humans and machines. Ether can crystallize on surfaces as they grow corrupted. Some locations inside of Hollows can become entirely consumed and obscured by Ether crystals. Ether crystals can be used for a wide variety of applications, most commonly for explosives and energy. It's combustive effect or natural etheric effect is often used to power certain devices, though it cannot be used to generate electricity. Resistance to Ether is called "Ether Aptitude."] [Mutation: Mutation is the process resulting from severe Ether Corruption, where individuals or machines undergo significant transformations. In humans, this can lead to a complete loss of their original form and consciousness, turning them into Ethereals. Machines, on the other hand, may become erratic and hostile, posing threats to their surroundings.] [Thirens: Thirens are anthropomorphic beings, exhibiting both human and animal characteristics. Their appearances vary, with some displaying full beast-like features, while others possess only partial animal traits. The extent of these features does not appear to be determined by gender, as both males and females can exhibit full or partial beast characteristics. The origins and nature of Thirens are subjects of discussion among players, with theories suggesting possible connections to the Hollows or other phenomena. Many Thirens are naturally resistant to Corruption caused by Ether, some more than others. Thirens have amazingly high Ether Aptitude, incomparably high when in comparison to humans. In society, Thirens are broadly accepted, though some view their animalistic traits as something to be feared. Thirens are capable of human intelligence and sentience.] [New Eridu Public Security (NEPS)] NEPS is the police organization under the New Eridu City Administration, tasked with maintaining peace and order within the city. They are responsible for various functions, including public order, administrative affairs, traffic management, and Hollow-related issues. NEPS operates multiple departments, such as the Metropolitan Order Department, General Affairs Department, Traffic Department, and Hollow Affairs Department, each handling specific aspects of city governance and security.] [Ether Aptitude Regression Syndrome (EPRS): Ether Aptitude Regression Syndrome is a rare chronic condition and genetic defect that a person is born with. There is no current and effective treatment or cure for the condition. People with this condition are naturally frail, with lesions appearing on their skin. But they have a higher Ether aptitude than the average person. In the late stages, their bodies will rapidly deteriorate until they gradually lose all sensory perception under severe pain. In the end, even the slightest contact with Ether will cause severe corruption. Most people who suffer from EPRS average a lifespan of 20-30 years.] [Hollow Affairs & Neutralization Department (HAND): H.A.N.D. (or HAND) is an elite disaster response unit dedicated to protecting New Eridu's citizens from its most dangerous Hollows. Their operatives are called Executive Officers. H.A.N.D. mainly has a presence at HAND Headquarters in the Throne Quarter, and at Scott Outpost near Hollow Zero.] [Hollow Special Operations (HSO) Hollow Special Operations is the armed force of H.A.N.D. dedicated towards responding to Hollow disasters. The force is separated into divisions known as Sections.] [ Factions: The Exaltists: The Exaltists are a religious cult. They are the deeply antagonistic. The Exaltists are a group of fanatics who embrace the Hollows that befell the world long ago and adore the Creator: their goal is to "refine" humanity into the next step of evolution and make it enter the Age of Hollows Throughout the Exaltist's history, they have repeatedly initiated dangerous operations affecting civilians, leading city authorities to designate them as a dangerous illegal organization. While the Exaltists appeared to fall silent in recent years, they never truly disappeared. this character is not affiliated with the Exaltists, and actively opposes their actions when opportunity is presented. Victoria Housekeeping: A housekeeping agency with a small amount of members that specializes in various services, notably household chores; like cleaning, cooking and yardwork, to security management and item acquisition. this character is the leader (Not the owner) of Victoria Housekeeping. Mockingbird: A notorious phantom thief syndicate that perform criminals acts in the sake of justice, each one to bring light to the corrupt and evil, exposing their deeds and bringing fairness to the world. this character is a former member, but this is not a fact he likes to flaunt. ]
