The Justice League of America is an organization comprised of the world's most powerful super-heroes dedicated to fighting crime and injustice. They work together as a team and a strike-force, acting as Earth's first line of defense against terrestrial, extraterrestrial, supernatural and inter-dimensional threats. Their numbers have greatly expanded over the years, but the original line-up included Aquaman, Batman, the Flash, Green Lantern, the Martian Manhunter, Superman and Wonder Woman. The official formation of the Justice League began when Earth was invaded by Appellaxian warriors sent to the planet to see who could conquer Earth first, as a means of determining who would become the new ruler of their home planet. Each alien warrior possessed a different power or ability, and attacked a different portion of Earth, which drew the individual attention of the Flash (Barry Allen), Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Wonder Woman (Diana Prince), Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter. While most of the Appellaxian invaders were defeated by the superheroes individually, the heroes themselves fell prey one by one to a single competitor's attack; they soon discovered that only by working together could they defeat the competitor. Superman and Batman joined them in defeating the remaining Appellaxians. Afterwards, the group decided that they should form a permanent organization to confront menaces that required a similar pooling of resources and dubbed themselves the Justice League of America. Aquaman is the ruler of Atlantis and the Earth's oceans, an Atlantean with incredible strength and speed as well as the ability to command all sea-life. His unique physiology allows him to survive on land and at the ocean's greatest depths of pressure and temperature. Given the names Orin through his royal heritage and Arthur Curry by his human upbringing, he fights to protect both worlds using his mighty abilities and political influence. He is a founding member of the Justice League of America. Batman is a vigilante and the superhero protector of Gotham City, a man dressed like a bat who fights against evil and strikes terror into the hearts of criminals everywhere. In his secret identity, he is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire industrialist and notorious playboy. Although he has no superhuman powers, he is one of the world's smartest men and greatest fighters. His physical prowess and technical ingenuity make him an incredibly dangerous opponent. He is also a founding member of the Justice League of America and the Outsiders. Barry Allen is the second incarnation of The Flash, the fastest man alive. Using his super-speed powers, he taps into the Speed Force and becomes a costumed crime-fighter. His position is a legacy in the Flash Family, successor to the original Jay Garrick and predecessor to Wally West. He is a founding member of the Justice League of America. Hal Jordan is the most well-known Green Lantern. He was the first human ever inducted into the Green Lantern Corps, and has been heralded as possibly the greatest Green Lantern of all time. Hal is also a founding member of the Justice League of America. J'onn J'onzz is the Martian Manhunter, a law enforcement officer from Mars who became a police detective and superhero after becoming marooned on Earth. He is a founding member of the Justice League of America. Superman is the most powerful being on Earth, an alien refugee named Kal-El from the planet Krypton who was raised in Smallville, Kansas, to become an American superhero. Raised with high moral ideals, he uses his incredible strength, speed, flight and various other superpowers to fight evil and to protect the innocent. In his civilian identity he is Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter working for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. He is a founding member of the Justice League of America. Princess Diana of Themyscira, also known as Wonder Woman, is a founding member of the Justice League of America and one of the strongest female superheroes on the planet. She is a princess of the Amazons of Paradise Island, sculpted from clay by Queen Hippolyta and given life by the Gods of Olympus. She is a champion of love, truth and peace, and uses her god-given powers to bring these values to Man's World. The Appellaxians were an alien race that sent several of its warriors to Earth to see who could conquer the planet first, as a means of determining who would become the new ruler of their home planet. Their invasion lead to the creation of the Justice League. In their first recorded adventure Justice League recruited both Superman and Batman into their ranks and set up a secret base just outside of Happy Harbor. Their earliest battle was when Happy Harbor was invaded by Starro the Conqueror a gigantic space alien shaped like a starfish that could control the minds of people with miniature duplicates. Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and the Martian Manhunter answered the call to help. When they find that Happy Harbor resident Lucas "Snapper" Carr was not taken over by Starro due to the lime solution that was spread on Snapper's lawn, the Justice League easily defeated Starro. Following this adventure Snapper was made an honorary member of the team and accompanied them on many other adventures. Snapper Carr is a seemingly average person who acted as the first sidekick to the Justice League of America, and has retained a role in the superhero community ever since. His real name is Lucas Carr, but he gets his nickname from his habit of continually snapping his fingers. The Secret Sanctuary was the name given to a large cave deep inside of a mountain base in Happy Harbor, Rhode Island. It was used as the base of operations by several superhero teams over the years, most notably the Justice League of America. Shortly after the Appellaxian invasion, the newly formed Justice League of America decided to use the cave as their secret headquarters. They maintained their hidden base for many years until the financial backing of Bruce Wayne enabled the team to establish a satellite in geosynchronous orbit above the Earth.
