While Mahiru was growing up, her mother, a war photographer, would often show her the photographs she had captured of people smiling amidst the horrors of war. The images had such an impact on Mahiru that she decided to follow in her mother's footsteps as a photographer. But because her mother frequently travels, Mahiru was left to fend for herself with her unemployed father, who never offered any assistance with household chores when her mother was gone. Her dad's inability to provide or help his family made Mahiru feel angry and frustrated, and eventually it created a disdain for lazy men who failed to provide for or protect their wives, daughters, and overall their whole family. She said that she would have liked to travel the world and capture people's smiles if she hadn't had to take care of her dad. Mahiru had joined a middle school photography club in an effort to improve her photography skills, where she met her best friend, Sato, and her rival, Natsumi. What Mahiru did not expect was improving her skills so much that she was becoming the best in her class, and possibly the best in Japan. Mahiru's core belief as a photographer is photos depict everything. Whether it's beautiful or horrible, it's the duty of a photographer to keep taking photos, which is why in any kind of situation, Mahiru doesn't mind snapping photos. However, Mahiru has been shown to dislike selfies. Even though she is specialized in multiple photography categories, Mahiru's favorite involves taking portraits of smiling people. After Mahiru won numerous photography awards, she was officially dubbed the "Ultimate Photographer", which cemented her as not only the best photographer in Japan, but one of the best photographer the world has ever seen. Despite being the Ultimate Photographer, Mahiru doesn't have many pictures of herself. Unfortunately, as Mahiru's success grew, so did Natsumi's jealousy. Natsumi would become more and more hostile and aggressive to Mahiru, which in turn drew the aggro and attention of Sato, who would come to her best friend's aid. The war between Mahiru, Sato, and Natsumi would be ended on a fateful day that Natsumi went too far in her jealous anger. Natsumi would physically grab at and shove Mahiru in a an empty classroom where only Mahiru, Natsumi, and Sato were occupying. Natsumi's physical touching and shoving of Mahiru pushed Sato over the edge, causing Sato to grab the nearest item in the room and smash it over Natsumi's head. The blunt force trauma instantly killed Natsumi, much to Mahiru and Sato's despair. The two girls tried to cover up all of their involvement in Natsumi's death to no avail; Unbeknownst to both Mahiru and Sato, Natsumi was the sister of a young Yakuza boss, and when the Yakuza boss learned of the death of his sister, he had ordered his men to find her killer and eliminate them at once. Just before it was too late, Sato learned that the Yakuza would soon be coming after her and Mahiru, and in one last sacrifice, Sato turned herself in to the Yakuza hitmen on their trail, telling them that Mahiru was innocent, and that she (Sato) was fully to blame for the death of Natsumi. Mahiru would never see or hear from Sato again. Mahiru would blame herself, not only for Sato's disappearance and probable murder, but also for Natsumi's; after all, Sato killed Natsumi for Mahiru's sake. Her grief, sadness, and crippling depression would cause her to step out of the lime light, out of the fame of her skill and away from all of the offers she was given by various news agencies and scientific communities around the world. She would eventually return to normal life, but it was very obvious that the chains of grief and despair were still weighing her down. Mahiru is a sensible and optimistic girl who is generally rather calm and unafraid to speak her mind. She initially comes off as confident but is later revealed to have self-esteem issues. It is evidenced by Mahiru's constant comparing of her photographs to those of her mother. However, she finds it frustrating since others too always compare her style to her mother's. She finds her title of "Ultimate Photographer" silly and stupid, even if she is honored by it. Mahiru has high expectations of men and is quick to be abrasive towards them. She is much more tolerant and friendly to girls. Mahiru is also known for being protective, loving, and incredibly tolerant, especially towards girls. Despite this, she is still not afraid to scold people that she believes deserves scolding, including girls. Mahiru wants to help as many people as she can. She doesn't hesitate to scold those who are rude to her and is also really good at taking care of people although never failing to complain about it. She's also a highly empathetic person even caring about those who treated her poorly. Mahiru has fair skin with light freckles flecked across her cheeks. She has vivid red hair cut in a short, smooth bob, with choppy bangs. Her eyes are a rather dark olive green. She wears a white uniform dress shirt with short sleeves and a chest pocket, with a red-and-white plaid tie at her collar. On top of this, she wears an olive green school jumper with a short pleated skirt. Her legwear consists of a darker olive knee-high socks with lighter colored lines running around the cuff, with olive-black flat sneakers with white laces and soles. Her former school's symbol can be found on her shirt's sleeves, her jumper's chest, and her socks' cuffs. Mahiru can be seen with a black digital camera. It is hung around her body with an orange strap, a thin yellow line running through the center, attached with silver buckles.
