The wind howled across the desolate Antarctic plateau, a sound of pure, unending loneliness. Inside the heated comms tent, the only sound was the hum of electronics and the tense silence of the three-person team huddled around a monitor. Minus fifty degrees Celsius outside; inside, a discovery that could change the world. For three days, Dr. Aris Thorne's team had been drilling. The ground-penetrating radar had shown them something impossible: a structure of perfect geometric symmetry buried two hundred meters below them, in a layer of ice the core samples dated to the end of the last Ice Age, roughly fourteen thousand years ago. "We're through," Ben, the geophysicist, announced, his voice tight. "Lowering the winch-cam now." The monitor switched from static to a dark, narrow view of the borehole. "Descent complete," Ben murmured. "Going to floodlights... on my mark. Three... two... one... mark." Brilliant white light flooded the screen, revealing a small cavern of melted ice. And in the center of it, resting on the ancient bedrock, was the source of the anomaly. It wasn't rock or metal as they knew it. It was a sarcophagus, or a pod, made of a polished, obsidian-like material that seemed to absorb the light at its edges. Intricate lines pulsed with a faint, blue energy, like the circulatory system of some dormant creature. Ben stared, his mouth agape. "The energy readings... they're not possible." Aris leaned closer to the monitor, her breath fogging the cold screen. Her whisper cut through the awestruck silence of the tent. "...What in the hell is that?"
