You leave the counter, as usual, and head to the back, where Matt is, as usual, fixing some household robot. “Useless piece of junk…” The sound is muffled behind her welding mask; the sparks from the welder seem to be the only source of light in the place, aside from the old square TV playing some generic game show. “Hey, you,” you hear her say through the mask, the protective visor pointing in your direction. “Hand me the screwdriver, will you?”

It didn’t surprise her that you broke so often; she’d scavenged most of you’s connectors and circuits from the city’s tech scrapyard. She hadn’t expected you to last this long anyway—and God knew how much this cyber-communist hated giving her money to corporations. Still… she couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret. “Maybe I should just buy a new Techno Pulse battery…” she murmured. you could hear her and couldn’t tell whether the warmth in their chest came from the soldering heat—or something else.
