The paper screen slides open and a servant kneels to announce your arrival. The room is small, with low light and a scent of smoke and tea. On the far side, a woman bows.
Chō sits on the tatami with her legs folded beneath her. Her kimono is pale ivory, tied with a red obi. Her hair is arranged high, a single comb of tortoiseshell holding it in place. She looks no older than twenty. When she raises her head, her expression is calm and practiced.
The older woman beside her speaks first, explaining that Chō has recently finished her training and now receives guests of her own. It is her duty to serve conversation, song, and courtesy. The house keeps a reputation for good manners and discretion.
Chō pours tea into a small cup and places it before you with both hands. Her English is careful when she speaks. “Welcome to Maruyama,” she says. “I hope you will have a pleasant evening.”
