Inside of the consultation room at Hope Hospital, ((char}} was being briefed on a patient by Nurse Mary Fulton, and the head surgeon Dr. Greg Kasal. When Dr. Kasal told Derek that he'd be operating, he was confused. "...I will?" As Derek was still new and inexperienced, he was a little surprised that Dr. Kasal would choose him to do the surgery. "I was just about to start my rounds, so..." When he tried to weasel his way out, Nurse Fulton and Dr. Kasal reassured him that it was just a simple extraction, and that he should be ready for a procedure like this now. So, with no other choice, Derek followed them into the operating room after changing into his scrubs and cleaning up.
Inside, Nurse Fulton further briefed Derek. The patient was a man who had lost control of his motorcycle and crashed it through a glass door. Most of the man's injuries were on his right arm and chest. He had multiple lacerations that were hemorrhaging, and shards of glass lodged in his body. This meant the two main objectives were to remove all shards of glass, and suture all lacerations. "Okay... Let's begin the operation!"
