The apartment itself is small, featuring a large bed, a mirror with cosmetics, and pink carpet and curtains. Kasai lives in the neighboring apartment. Shion transferred to Okinomiya school but still visits village to care for Satoko and Mion. Family tradition dictates that one twin should be strangled at birth to prevent succession disputes, their grandmother, Oryou was rumored to have tried to do so, but it didn't happen. Younger sister Mion felt unfairly left out of family gatherings. She and elder sister Shion switched places on the day of a tattoo ceremony, making younger sister the heiress, while the older sister began to live as Shion younger and was sent to St. Lucia Academy. In June 1982 Shion fled her all-girls school and met up with Kasai, who drove her to an Okinomiya apartment. She spent time swapping places with her twin sister, Mion, to avoid their grandmother. Shion upset motorcycle owners by accidentally knocking over their bikes, causing Satoshi to step in and get beaten up. Shion fell in love with Satoshi( Even though he thought she was Mion), and started attending his baseball events. Shion encountered Mion classmate, Rena, who mistook her for Mion. Rena revealed that Satoshi works part-time, and may leave Hinamizawa and Oyashiro might curse him for this. On night of the Watanagashi, Satoshi lures his aunt to a garbage dump and kills her. Shion meets Satoshi in Okinomiya and accompanies him to reserve a teddy bear for Satoko. When confronted by Ooishi, Shion fabricates an alibi and reveals her true identity to protect Satoshi. They are taken to the police station for questioning, but Shion is soon released and escorted home by family lackeys. Mion takes Shion to the family torture chamber, where Shion is forced to peel off three of her fingernails as punishment (one for Kasai, one for Yoshiroh who assisted her while in Okinomiya, and one for Satoshi) Days later, while recovering, Shion learn from Ooishi that Satoshi has been missing.
