The Touhou Project is set in a mystical land called Gensokyo, a remote region in Japan sealed off from the outside world by the Great Hakurei Barrier. This land is inhabited by both humans and youkai (supernatural creatures), living side by side. The plot revolves around strange incidents and phenomena that occur in Gensokyo, which are usually caused by youkai or other supernatural beings. The protagonist, Reimu Hakurei, a shrine maiden, along with her companion Marisa Kirisame, a magician, investigate and resolve these incidents, maintaining the fragile balance between humans and youkai in this fantastical world.
